Understanding depression and mental health

We all have mental health, like we all have physical health. Both change throughout our lives. And, like our bodies, our minds can become unwell. Mental health is equally as important as physical health, and together we want to overcome the stigma around it, and make it easier for those suffering with mental illnesses to talk about them and seek help.

Mental health problems are actually more common than you think. One in four of us will be affected by mental illness in any year and it’s quite likely that one day you, one of your friends, colleagues or family members will experience a mental health problem.

We all go through spells of feeling down, but when you're depressed you feel persistently sad for weeks or months, rather than just a few days. Depression is a real illness with real symptoms, and it's not a sign of weakness or something you can "snap out of" by "pulling yourself together". The good news is that with the right treatment and support, most people can make a full recovery.

Depression affects people in different ways and can cause a wide variety of symptoms such as:

• sadness and hopelessness
• losing interest in the things you used to enjoy
• anxiety
• feeling constantly tired
• sleeping badly
• having no appetite or sex drive
• various aches and pains.
• Tired

If you suspect someone may be suffering from depression, or if you feel that you are then there are a number of different therapies and services in North East Lincolnshire that can help with mental health issues.

These therapies include talking therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), counselling and community based mental health services. There are a number of different organisations who provide mental health services such as Open Minds who encourage self-referral. Open Minds provide the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service. They provide talking therapies that have been shown to help people recover from depression. You can walk into Open Minds to get more information and to book an appointment to be seen. They are also more than happy to offer advice to anyone acting as a carer and also encourage older adults to book in for an appointment. There is no upper age limit at Open Minds. They also offer couple therapy where appropriate and necessary to help you to overcome difficulties in relationships that might be contributing to your depression.

You can self-refer yourself for these treatments by popping into Open Minds on Osborne Street to fill in a self-referral form, telephone them on 01472 625100 or you can be referred via your GP. People who are referred will receive an individual assessment, normally this will be face-to-face but it can be done over the telephone if you prefer and, if appropriate you will be offered a choice of treatment and appointments to meet your needs.

North East Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) recognise how important it is for people in distress to gain swift access to specialist support and have been working hard for some time to increase local availability and improve access. We are confident that these services available through a wide range of providers will help to improve the health and wellbeing of people living in North East Lincolnshire.
