Living well with Diabetes!

Being diagnosed with a serious long term health condition can make anyone feel worried and isolated. However, people living with diabetes in North East Lincolnshire are keen to show others that they’re not on their own.

Members of the recently formed NEL Diabetes Support Group are encouraging people to find out more about the condition and what they can do to live better with diabetes.

The group, which also has a Facebook page, is a chance for people with diabetes, whether they are newly diagnosed or have had the condition for some time, to share their experiences, learn more about what they can do to control their diabetes as well as have some fun and a cup of tea in a relaxed setting.

Over the coming months, expert speakers will cover topics such as diet, exercise, medication and avoiding complications.

“We want to show people that it’s possible to live better with Diabetes and that making some lifestyle changes or understanding the condition better can make a big difference to how you feel,” explained Dave McGuire, chair of the group and a community representative with North East Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

“The group isn’t just for diabetics but also for their families and carers. After all, what’s a healthy lifestyle for someone with Diabetes is also a healthy lifestyle for someone who doesn’t have the condition. Making positive changes to your diet, getting more exercise can in some cases (although not all) prevent someone who is at risk from developing the condition in the first place.”

The group meets every 3rd Monday of the month at Open Door, Albion Street, Grimsby. If you’d like to learn more contact Dave by email mcguire.dave@hotmail.co.uk or visit the Facebook page.

Dr Arun Nayyar, clinical lead for Diabetes with North East Lincolnshire CCG, said the support group had an important role to play empowering people with diabetes to take more control of their condition.

“Support from people who are going through or who have been through similar experiences is invaluable,” said Dr Nayyar. "I would encourage anyone newly diagnosed or who’s lived with the condition for some time to see what the support group can offer them.”

North East Lincolnshire CCG has developed an information pack called Diabetes and You with the support of patients and clinicians.

The guide provides lots of information about diabetes, how it can affect your health and most importantly what actions you can take to care for your diabetes well. It includes advice on managing your weight, what to do when you are ill as well as driving and going on holiday. There’s also a pack for you to share with family and friends to help them be aware of diabetes.

The guide is split into five packs which you can download by clicking the links below:
