New town road race puts the GREAT in Great Grimsby

A major new sporting event will hit the streets of Grimsby this summer thanks to a collaboration between North East Lincolnshire Council, race organisers Tape2Tape and some of the town’s most prominent employers.

The DONG Energy Great Grimsby 10k takes place on Sunday 31 July 2016 and will become an annual sporting event centred around a 10km (6.2 mile) road race, a fun run and a finishing line festival in one of the town’s best-loved parks.

Race entry costs just £12 (or £10 for UK Athletics affiliated runners) for the 10k and only £4 for the fun run.

Entry fees have been kept low thanks to the generosity of sponsors including DONG Energy, Young’s Seafood, Associated British Ports (ABP), Grimsby Town Football Club, North East Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group, Wilkin Chapman LLP, Marshall Volkswagen (Grimsby) and Humberside Fire and Rescue.

The event is also benefitting from the support of the Council’s partners Engie and Lincs Inspire, the Grimsby Telegraph and Grimsby Institute.

This brand new race will see up to 1,000 runners follow a super-flat course starting in front of the impressive Grimsby Town Hall, heading to Nun’s Corner, through Scartho towards New Waltham before returning to Grimsby via Peaks Parkway and finishing in the stunning surroundings of People’s Park.

Councillor Terry Walker, portfolio holder for leisure, citizens and public protection, said: “It’s years since there was an event like this in Grimsby and when Rob Walsh, the Council’s chief executive, first mooted the idea last year I said let’s crack on with it.

“As well as the 10k race, we’re staging a fun run and festival so it’s an event the whole town can get behind and put the GREAT in Great Grimsby.

“It’s terrific that several local employers have given the event their backing and I’m very grateful for all the support that has been offered.

“There’ll also be a big charity element to the race that will be revealed at a later date.

“Let’s make it a day to remember, enter now at www.greatgrimsby10k.com.”

Jason Ledden, Construction Project Manager for Race Bank at DONG Energy, said: “This is a fantastic new sporting event for Grimsby and will really bring the town together. At DONG Energy we are very focussed on the wellbeing of our employees, and training for this race will be a great way for the team here at our Race Bank offshore wind farm site to get fit and have fun.

“We are extremely proud to be supporting the race and this is another example of our commitment to the Grimsby area.”

Race directors Nicola Clifford and Neil Pattison from Tape2Tape said: “We are absolutely delighted to be given this opportunity by North East Lincolnshire Council to put on a top quality 10km race in Grimsby. The area already has the popular Cleethorpes New Year’s Day 10k and the addition of the DONG Energy Great Grimsby 10k to the race calendar is certain to be a big coup for the area.

“A massive amount of preparation work has already taken place and this means the whole race will take place in safety on totally closed roads. All runners will receive a fabulous technical tee shirt, bespoke event medal and goody bag once they pass underneath the imposing race finish arch on the grass in People’s Park.

“The course is exceptionally flat and will be a great opportunity for runners to post a quick time.

"It’s also the perfect course for anyone wanting to undertake a 10km race for the first time.”

Race organisers Tape2Tape have had the course professionally measured and the race is licensed by UK Athletics.
