North East Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group launches waste campaign to urge people to take ownership of their medicine

North East Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is urging their patients to take ownership of the quantity of medicine that they order and to only order what they need.

Medicine waste is a huge, costly problem within the NHS, costing the UK £300m per year and £1m per year in North East Lincolnshire alone. Pharmacies are not able to reuse returned medication and therefore the NHS is charged. Also there are patients who put their personal safety at risk by keeping hold of unused medication which may be past its ‘use by’ date. For this reason, waste management needs to be tackled.

The CCG are holding a number of local events open to the public where they can attend and review their medicine ordering system and learn how to dispose of medicine correctly and safely. Comment cards will be provided for the public to let us know how they obtain their medicine, how they dispose of it and if they know where to take unwanted medication.

Dr Andrew Stead, Prescribing Lead, North East Lincolnshire CCG said: Medicine waste is a big cost to the NHS and we would urge patients that do have repeat prescriptions to routinely discuss their medication with their GP or pharmacist to ensure their prescription is regularly reviewed”.
