Accessible Information Standards (AIS)

From 1st August 2016, all NHS organisations that provide NHS care or adult social care must follow the Accessible Information Standards. The five standards are:

  1. Ask people if they have  any information or communication needs, and find out how to meet their needs.
  2. Record communication needs clearly and in a set way
  3. Highlight or flag the person's file or notes so it is clear that they have information or communication needs and how to meet those needs
  4. With the consent/permission of the person share their information and communication needs with other providers of NHS and Adult Social Care
  5. Take steps to ensure that people recieve information which they can access and understand, and recieve communication support if they need it

These standards do not apply directly to Clinical Commissioning Groups, however we must support our providers to comply with the requirements.

We fund an interpretation service that is used by the CCG and GP Practices to ensure that patients have access to high quality interpretation services. This includes access to sign language (BSL), as well as other languages.

For more information on the Accessible Information Standards, please visit the NHS England website.
