Breast cancer patients invited to health and wellbeing days

Breast cancer patients in Grimsby and Scunthorpe are being invited to special health and wellbeing days tailored to their needs.

Men and women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, received treatment or have recovered from the illness are invited to attend the free taster days.

Run by the Trust’s breast cancer survivorship team in partnership with local leisure centres, those attending will be shown specific exercises tailored for people who have been treated for breast cancer.

Exercise and sports including table tennis, badminton, toning tables, aqua aerobics, bowling, zumba, pilates, tai-chi, gym work, swim session, arts and crafts and adapted bikes will be on offer on the day.

The aim is to provide an exclusive, supported and fun event tailored purely for breast cancer patients to introduce them to a wide range of exercises in the hope that they will be inspired to take up physical activity to improve their overall health and wellbeing following their treatment.

Nicola Dixon, clinical nurse specialist in the breast cancer survivorship team, said: “Research shows that patients who exercise for three hours per week can lower their chance
of their cancer reoccurring by as much as 40 per cent . That’s why it’s so important to deliver a tailored exercise programme for breast patients, empowering them to self-manage as much as possible.”

Sue Cooper, clinical nurse specialist, added: “A key aspect of recovery is exercise but there are certain movements that are difficult for patients who have undergone surgery and they often don’t know who much exercise is safe for them to do.

“We would invite anyone who has received treatment for breast cancer, whether you are just starting treatment or are five years down the line, to come along and have a go at a range of exercises and meet other people who have been affected by breast cancer.”

The first event has been arranged for Monday September 21 at Grimsby Leisure Centre from 9am to 2pm. There will also be an event in Scunthorpe on Monday October 12 at Riddings Pool from 10.30am to 1.30pm.

To book onto one of the sessions or to find out more call Sue or Nicky on (01472) 874111 extension 2397.
