COVID-19: Keeping safe this weekend

Health and Council chiefs have come together to call for people to remember to stay safe this weekend.

With pubs, bars and restaurants due to re-open across North East Lincolnshire, the call has come to remember that Covid-19 is still around, and still presents a significant threat to public health.

It’s widely expected that lots of people will come out into Grimsby and Cleethorpes as lockdown restrictions ease from Saturday (4 July 2020) .

But chiefs have warned that forgetting to social distance might mean that the virus can pass more easily between people and increase the rate of infection in North East Lincolnshire.

“So far, we have been remarkably lucky in having low numbers of people who have contracted the virus in North East Lincolnshire,” said Steve Pintus, Director of Public Health.

“And we want it to stay that way. People must remember the key guidelines in staying safe – social distance, continue to wash your hands and remember to not gather in large groups.”

Council Leader Philip Jackson said: “Whilst we want everyone to have a good time, we need people to act responsibly. If you’re visiting bars and pubs this weekend, drink sensibly, and pre-plan your travel and how you are going to get home.

“And for your own safety, if you get to a venue and you can see that social distancing isn’t possible, think about whether that pint or short is really worth it. ‘’

And Cllr Ron Shepherd, Cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities, also supported Humberside Police’s call for people to behave sensibly, adding:

“Anti social behaviour is completely unacceptable and we’re pleased to be working with the police to ensure no one’s put at risk and everyone can enjoy the opportunity to socialise safely.

“Our emergency services are likely to be stretched already this weekend – so spare a thought for them too and don’t add to their burden.”

As a reminder, the following are still not permissible:

  • Gathering indoors in groups of more than two households (support bubble counts as one household). This also includes when dining out or going to the pub.
  • Outdoor gatherings in a group of more than six people from different households; gatherings larger than 6 should only take place if everyone is from just two households.
  • Interacting socially with those outside the group you are attending a place with, even if you see other people you know.
  • Staying overnight away from your home with members of more than one other household (support bubble counts as one household)

Please also remember, there are strict social distancing measures in place in clinical settings so it’s more important than ever to only attend A&E if it’s a genuine emergency. If it’s not an emergency but you still need urgent medical advice on an evening or weekend, you can ring 01472 256256, 24 hours a day, every day of the year

Supporting the call, Assistant Chief Constable Paul Anderson, from Humberside Police, said: “With pubs, bars and restaurants reopening this weekend, we expect many areas across Hull, East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire to become busier as people head out to socialise together.

“We will have additional officers from our Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) and our Patrol teams out across the force area, including places with high concentrations of hospitality such as Cleethorpes, patrolling and checking in with local bars and pubs, to help keep everyone safe.”
