Extra Care Housing Available Soon

New housing will be available this autumn for people accessing care services locally, that will provide them with suitable living space here in Grimsby.

Burchester Court is an extra care housing scheme providing 60 apartments on Winchester Avenue, that will be opening for people to rent from October.

Those interested in living in one of the apartments will have the opportunity to look around inside a show apartment at open house events planned in the coming months.

Extra Care Housing (ECH) schemes provide homes with care and support on-site for people aged 55+ years and respond to the physical and emotional needs of individuals and their family. A care team is available on-site 24 hours a day, all year, to provide a flexible care and support service. This enables people to maintain their independence in a safe and secure environment.

Burchester Court was designed by Morgan Sindall and built by Esh to a high standard and the building offers a space suitable for people who are less mobile and need equipment or adaptations to assist them with daily life, as well as those with minimal/no current needs. One and two bedroom flats are available within the building, complete with communal areas and facilities.

The housing provider Places for People Living + are organising home viewing events that will open up the apartments to prospective residents and showcase the wonderful living space. Measures are being put in place to ensure the safety of all those involved in these viewings; including limits on the number of visitors and cleaning of the apartments. The apartments will be open to viewings on the following dates over the summer:

8th 14th and 23rd July
7th and 17th August
1st and 14th September

Bev Compton, Director of Adult Services at NELCCG said, “I’m so pleased that this much needed extra care housing scheme will soon be complete and open for people to view and express an interest in. Burchester Court will provide care and support and enable those with care needs to live independently in a secure environment and have a good quality of life.
“I must also thank all those involved for their hard work and effort in progressing the housing scheme through recent challenging times and in line with safe distancing restrictions, so that the apartments would be ready and people can move in.”

Councillor Margaret Cracknell, portfolio holder for health, wellbeing and adult social care at North East Lincolnshire Council said: “A person’s mobility should not get in the way of their living so I’m really happy that our area is to benefit from further adapted accommodation to allow people to live more independently.

“The on-site support and care team are especially reassuring for any future residents, who will be able to relax more in knowing that if they do have difficult days, there will be people nearby to offer support.”

People wishing to express an interest and apply to move into the accommodation within this extra care housing, must complete an application form and have their care and housing needs assessed, including physical, social and emotional/mental health needs.

A panel will consider applicants, and those who are successful will be put onto a waiting list for the extra care housing scheme. There is also Strand Court, on Hope Street in Grimsby, which operates in the same way and for which people can also express an interest.
