How to access urgent NHS help on 19 September

Monday 19 September has been declared a national bank holiday to mark the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral. Your GP practice will be closed to allow staff and patients to pay their respects to Her Majesty with the rest of the nation.

Urgent NHS services will still be open and there will be advice and support on hand if you or a member of your family has an accident or becomes unwell.

Please remember, emergency services are extremely busy saving lives and you should only ring 999 or attend A&E in a medical or mental health emergency. This is when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk, or if you have been advised to attend A&E by NHS 111, a GP, or pharmacist.

If you need help urgently, visit 111.nhs.uk 24/7. You can also phone 111, but it is likely that your problem will be dealt with quicker online. All you need to do is answer questions about your symptoms and you will be directed to the right service for you. This may be self-care advice, information about where you can collect medicine, or you may be booked in for a face-to-face appointment with a healthcare professional.

Fortunately, most people do not need professional help and a lot of minor illnesses and injuries can be treated at home with a well-stocked medicine cabinet or first aid kit. For immediate advice visit www.nhs.uk/conditions and search for your symptom or ailment.

You can also ask a pharmacist for clinical advice and over the counter medicines for a range of minor illnesses like sore throats, colds, tummy trouble and aches and pains. If your symptoms suggest it’s something more serious, the pharmacist will direct you to the help you need. A list of pharmacies who will be open on the Bank can be found on the North East Lincolnshire website.
