North East Lincolnshire Council and NHS North East Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group have won a bid for NHS funding to provide mental health and emotional wellbeing support for young people.

The funding is part of the NHS long term plan to invest some £9.3bn to provide mental health support for 70,000 more children and young people by 2021 along with a commitment to make such support more accessible for a further 345,000 youngsters by 2023/24.

Mental Health Support Teams will now be formed to work with a number of educational settings in North East Lincolnshire to offer comprehensive support to students from next year following training.

Councillor Ian Lindley, portfolio holder for children and young people, said: “This is great news for young people in our area.

“We were very lucky to be successful in this bid, and are now part of a very small number of areas which will have access to some of the very first Mental Health Support Teams.

“Mental health support is vital to young people - particularly when they are at a point in their lives where they can undergo so much pressure to get grades and make decisions about their future, as well as facing potential stigma around sexuality, gender and body imagery. Support like this is so important and I’m pleased that we’ve won the bid.”

Lauren King, Commissioning Lead (Women & Children's Health) at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: ““Children and young people have to deal with pressures from many directions which can impact on their mental and emotional wellbeing.

“By working with mental health specialists, local educational settings will be able to develop the expertise to support our young people to not only cope with the challenges they face but flourish and reach their full potential.”

North East Lincolnshire Council will now contact educational settings to discuss the opportunity moving forward.
